NBR, NITRILE OR BUNA-N RUBBERS
(Acrylonitrile-Butadiene Copolymers) compounds of these polymers are the backbone of the gasket line. Polymers
vary from 18% to 50% acrylonitrile content. Resistance to
petroleum products increases as acrylonitrile increases;
conversely low temperature flexibility decreases.
Government specifications require low acrylonitrile
Compounds for -65°F performance at a sacrifice of fuel,
oil and high temperature resistance. Nitrile Compounds
have excellent compression set, tear and abrasion
resistance. Unless especially compounded, they do not
have too good resistance to ozone, sunlight, or weather. In service, they should not be stretched more than 5% or stored near motors or other ozone generating electrical equipment. They should be kept from direct sunlight. They are used for general purpose oil, water and air, silicone oils and grease, Di-ester base lubricants and ethylene glycol base antifreeze fluids at temperatures as low as -65°F to 275°F. They should not be used with carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene cleaning fluids, nitrobenzene, aniline, phosphate ester fluids, ketone, strong acids or automotive brake fluids.
SI OR SILICONE RUBBERS:
(Dow Corning®, General Electric®, Union Carbide® or Stauffer-Wacker®) The silicones have good tensile, tear and abrasion resistance but are not recommended for dynamic seals. They have excellent low temperature flexibility...some to -175°F. In dry heat, 450°F is the top for continuous duty with 600°F possible for short periods, they are not recommended for low aniline petroleum fluids, ketone, or aromatics, but are used primarily for dry heat static seals. Many Si Compounds have high mold shrinkage. Parts produced in standard "O" Ring molds are undersize and require Class II tolerances. Other are available which mold to Class I tolerances.
FPM OR FLUOROCARBON RUBBERS:
(Viton by Dupont® or Flurelt = by 3M®). Compounds of these elastomers have excellent mechanical, chemical and heat resistance. They stand 400°F continuous duties and will take 600°F for short periods of time. They are commended for petroleum oils and grease. Di-ester and Silicate ester base lubricants, silicone fluids and greases, halogenated hydrocarbons, strong acids by special compounding (except hot hydrofluric or chloro-sulfonic), some phosphate ester fluids (except Skydrol**) They should not be used with ketone such as MEK and acetone, amines (HDMH. Anhydrous ammonia, or low molecular weight alcohol's, esters or ethers. They are especially good for hard vacuum service because of their high molecular weight and low gas permeability. They have been used to -65°F in some state seals...flexibility. 0° to 10°F Because of high molding shrinkage, FPM "O" Rings require Class II tolerances. |
